Bill Helms started Square Dancing in Ogden, Utah at the age of eight years old. He started calling at the age of 12, and by the age of 14 was calling for 2 clubs in the Ogden area.
In 1976 he moved to Portland Oregon.
Besides being the Club Caller for the B’n’B Square & Round Dance Club, in Oregon City, where his wife Tami, is the Club Cuer, he was Caller for several clubs in our area, including Mix 'n' Mingle, and Tumbleweeds.
Bill called throughout the U.S., Canada, and in New Zealand. He had been a featured caller at many major festivals such as the Utah State Festival, Oregon Summer Festival, Oregon Mid-Winter Festival, Colorado State Festival, Golden State Festival, Silver State Festival, Yuma Festival plus many other festivals and weekends.
Besides being a Square Dance Caller for levels mainstream to Advanced, he was a musician and singer. He played guitar, bass guitar, drums, and blue grass banjo. He recorded with Chinook Records and has many releases on the Chinook Label. He was also a member of Callerlab, Roundalab, and URDC.
So many people were enriched by his life. He was an acclaimed caller, not only for his skillful patters, but for his singing voice which was rich and a joy to listen to, even if you weren’t dancing to it.
Bill's philosophy in Square Dancing was "Dance just for the fun of it and not get too caught up in the politics that plague every major organization these days. Where can you go to get good exercise, be with good friends, and listen to great music in a clean and healthy environment?”
Bill is survived by his wife Tami, and his only daughter Alicia, who was married in June 2005.
